Snowshoe at Obererbs

Image
Deep snow and thick forest on this marked snowshoe route to Obererbs.  It's at the end of the road in the Sernf River valley.  In the summer, the bus goes all the way to the ski hut.  In the winter, you have to climb 1300'.  On this day, I didn't make it and turned around short of the hut. This is a picture from December 2015 when I last visited Elm and climbed up to Obererbs. Skihutte Erbs, also December 2015.

Walking around Elm

Image
A beautiful late afternoon in Elm.  Looking east in Glarnerland.  Piz Segnes is the prominent peak in the picture at ~ 10,200'. Segnes Pass is just to the right of the peak at ~ 8600'.  The jagged peaks to the right of the pass are called the Tschingelhorner. Piz Sardona is behind Piz Segnes.  This mountain range is considered a "Tectonic Arena" as it shows how mountain ranges are formed.  The tops of the peaks are older rock (African continent) with younger rocks in a layer underneath (European continent).

Finally, a beautiful sunny day!  Temperature in the mid 30s.  1670' climb from the gondola station to the hut. Weissenberge is a sun terrace above Matt. Yours truly, enjoying the sunshine!

Skihutte snowshoe route (red) after gondola to Weissenberge "sun terrace" from Matt.  Clouds/fog finally relented for a few minutes! Elm is in the distance.

Risiboden Snowshoe

Image
To enjoy this trek, take the Elm gondola to Ampachli and follow the signs to Hengstboden.  There the trail splits -- one to Risiboden and the other to Mungga Hutta (hut/restaurant of the Elm ski resort). Started the day with skiing at Elm.  Lots of snow behind the Schabell lift!
